Most doypacks on the market today are in the form of "complex" bags, bags whose film is made up of several layers of different materials (with the aim of combining the properties of the different materials into a single product).
The problem is that these complex bags are almost always kept out of the recycling channels, as they are very difficult to recycle. In fact, you only have to look in shops to see that most eco-refills have a sorting instruction that says "disposable plastic soft bag": these single-use soft plastic packaging must therefore be thrown away, without going through the recycling box, to be incinerated with the rest of the household waste.
So why is it so difficult to recycle a complex pouch? Because it requires the addition of a binding step in the process, which is to separate the materials first. The process is theoretically not impossible to carry out, but would require a lot of energy, technique and time, which is why sorting centres do not implement it.

WHICH MATERIAL TO CHOOSE?
Single-material packaging is therefore preferable for recyclability, but which material should be chosen? Today, flexible plastic bags are made from thermoplastic polymers. As their name indicates, these polymers have the particularity of melting at a certain temperature to allow products at the end of their life to be reprocessed and reused in the manufacture of new bags. These thermoplastic polymers are therefore very suitable for the recyclability of the product (if, once again, they are used alone in the manufacture of the bags).
WHY USE POLYETHYLENE (PE)?
Polyethylene (PE) is today the most commonly used polymer for the manufacture of eco-refills. This plastic alone accounts for about a third of total synthetic production and half of all plastic packaging. At the same time, this "mass market" polymer is also the most recyclable. For example, the recycling of household waste into PE film is now the most developed recycling method in France.
