The refrigerator is the most hygienically sensitive part of the kitchen. You have two “duties” towards it: always know its temperature, which should never exceed 4 degrees. And then clean it regularly. That means once a month. How do you do it? Follow the explanations of Dr Fabien Squinazi, former director of the Hygiene Laboratory of the city of Paris.
Your
refrigerator needs to be looked after all year round. This household appliance
does not take up so much space in your kitchen for nothing. It is not only
essential for storing perishable food, but also for preventing food poisoning.
To begin
with, store your food correctly. This is an essential starting point for the
hygiene of your fridge. And when you come back from the supermarket, remove all
packaging. The products you have bought have been stored in dusty sheds for
varying lengths of time before they reach your trolley.
NO MORE
THAN 4°C!
“These
packages are not necessarily clean, even if they are kept cold,” says Dr
Fabien Squinazi. “In the boxes, there is often mould, fungus. All it takes
is a little bit of humidity, and the mould will develop very quickly. And it’s
a very quick way to contaminate a fridge or any cupboard. “Dr Fabien
Squinazi also stresses the importance of checking the temperature of your
fridge. “Everyone should make sure that the fridge is below 4°C, this is
essential to preserve food properly. This is essential to keep food safe.”
All you need to do is install a thermometer.
WHEN TO WASH YOUR FRIDGE?
Everyone asks this question. For Dr. Fabien Squinazi, “you shouldn’t wait for signals such as bad smells, dirt or mould. I recommend cleaning your fridge regularly, in other words once a month. The key word here is prevention! “In fact, dirt and mould are the food of germs. So to stop them from spreading, you have to remove their food and clean. The more regularly you do this, the greater the risk of becoming a victim of food poisoning caused by salmonella.
HOW TO
CLEAN YOUR FRIDGE PROPERLY?
And now the
method. “There are different options,” says Dr Squinazi. “Of
course you have bleach, but the current trend is to use less toxic products,
such as white vinegar and other natural products. You should always work with a
damp cloth and then you clean all the walls of your fridge and all the
supports. “
DEFROST
The last important tip is defrosting. Did you
know that a few centimetres of frost can increase the electricity consumption
of your fridge? Not to mention that frost can cause problems with the seals. It
is therefore best to defrost regularly by switching off your fridge. For an
effective operation, allow 3 hours!
